Declan Purcell
Chairperson, Irish Competition Authority
Declan Purcell was appointed by the Government in April 1998 as a full-time Board Member of the Irish Competition Authority and was appointed Chairman in April 2010. He is also Director of the Authority's Strategy and Corporate Services Divisions.
He has worked in the public service since 1969, mainly in the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (1976 - 1998). During that period, he held a wide range of management positions; these included responsibility for policy development in relation to industry, consumer protection, national human resource development and company law. He led the departmental policy and drafting teams during the preparation and passage of over 20 legislative Acts, including the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980 and two major Companies Acts in 1990.
Declan holds an MSc in Economic Policy Studies (Competition and Regulation) from Trinity College Dublin.
